The cleaning that schools require is shaped by things most workplaces never have to consider: safeguarding, infection control, the rhythm of term-time and holidays, and a duty of care to people who are more vulnerable to the consequences of a poor clean. A standard that is perfectly adequate for a commercial office can fall well short in a school.
This guide sets out what education settings should expect from a cleaning provider, and the standards a business manager or trust should look for. It sits alongside our guide to commercial cleaning standards.
Why school cleaning is a category of its own
- Safeguarding – anyone working in a school around children must be appropriately vetted and safeguarding-aware, cleaners included.
- Infection control – close contact, shared spaces and young immune systems mean cross-contamination spreads fast, and good hygiene directly affects pupil and staff absence.
- Term-time and holidays – daily cleaning has to work around the school day, while holidays are the window for the deep work that cannot happen with pupils on site.
- Scrutiny – parents, governors and inspectors all notice the state of a school, and standards are expected to be visibly high.
Safeguarding comes first
Every Oculus operative working in a school is DBS-checked and safeguarding-aware, works to agreed signing-in and identification procedures, and understands they are working in a safeguarding environment, not simply cleaning a building. Daily operatives are briefed on the school’s layout, its higher-risk areas such as science labs and dining rooms, and its specific safeguarding expectations before the first clean. For a school, that is the baseline before any conversation about cleaning standards begins.
Colour coding and infection control
Colour coding matters everywhere, but in a school it is essential. Colour-coded equipment is used as standard, keeping washroom, classroom, kitchen and medical-room cleaning strictly separate so bacteria are not carried from one to another. Our operatives are BICSc-trained, we use child-safe, eco-friendly products throughout, and the four-colour scheme – red for washrooms, blue for general areas, green for kitchens, yellow for clinical is applied consistently. We explain it in full in our guide to colour coding.
Common touchpoints such as door handles, taps, and shared equipment get particular attention because these are where infection spreads and where a visible, consistent regime is most effective.
Holiday and end-of-term deep cleans
Holiday deep cleans are a major part of what we do for schools. The breaks are when the heavy work gets done: deep cleans, floor stripping and resealing, carpet cleaning, high-level cleaning and the detailed work that keeps a building healthy but cannot happen during term. We plan Christmas, Easter, half-term and summer programmes across the full academic calendar at contract commencement, coordinated with your estates or business management team, so a school returns after every break visibly and genuinely clean. After building or refurbishment work, a post-builders clean gets a space handover-ready.
Cleaning In practice
When a North West primary school had its heating system replaced over the February half-term, we were asked to deep-clean the premises before pupils and staff returned – a tight window, completed and signed off ready for the first day back. You can read the primary school deep clean case study for the detail.
What a professional school clean should include
- DBS-checked, safeguarding-aware operatives
- Colour-coded equipment, BICSc-trained staff and child-safe products
- A specification split into daily, regular and holiday deep-clean work
- Particular attention to washrooms, kitchens and touchpoints
- Documentation for inspections, with regular audits and performance reporting
- A named supervisor and directly employed teams who know the site
The standard a school should hold out for
Cleaning is one of the quieter contributors to a school that runs well: lower absence, a building people are proud of, and no unwelcome surprises when someone inspects. If you are reviewing cleaning for your school, academy or trust, we will assess the site and set out a specification built around your term and holiday pattern. Frequently asked questions
Are your cleaning staff DBS checked?
Yes. Operatives working in schools are DBS-checked and safeguarding-aware, and follow the school’s signing-in and identification procedures.
Do you offer holiday deep cleans?
Yes – complete deep cleans during half-terms, Easter and summer, planned around your academic calendar at the start of the contract so each term begins with the building freshly cleaned.
How is colour coding used in a school?
Separate colour-coded equipment is used for washrooms, general areas, kitchens and medical rooms, so cleaning equipment never carries bacteria from a higher-risk area to a lower-risk one. It is a core infection-control measure.
Which areas do you cover?
Wirral, Liverpool and Merseyside, Chester and Cheshire West, Deeside and the wider North West, from our base in Bromborough.
